Weed-Infused Beer Might Be Sold Nationwide Starting 2017

Beer and cannabis share more intrinsic properties than you probably are aware of. Hops – one of the main ingredients in beer in general, but more specifically the beautifully bitter, citrusy backbone of India Pale Ales – are physically and chemically closely related to the cannabis plant.

Hops look like weed, can smell like weed, and even taste a bit weedy. The reason for this olfactory link lies in the presence of terpenes in both cannabis and hop cones.

Recognizing the similarities between the two plants, Dad’s and Dude’s Breweria in Aurora, Colorado (but of course it’s in Colorado) has been brewing a couple of especially dank “CannaBeers,” landing Thomas Hembree and his son Mason firmly at the intersection of the state’s budding Cannabis industry and the existing brewing culture.

Having already brewed many weed-themed beers – such as their Dank IPA, Diggity Dank Imperial IPA, Pineapple Express Honey Blonde Ale, and Sativa 420% Legal IPA (actually infused with CBD) – the Dad and Dude team are back to pushing the envelope with their upcoming General Washington’s Secret Stash.

The brewing style is unclear as of yet, but we do know that there will not be any THC in this beer, so no, it won’t get you high.

The brewery had to jump through several legal hoops over the past year to get Federal approval for distribution of a product made with cannabis (which is appallingly still considered a Schedule 1 drug).

But apparently, the beer is set to be canned in November and sent out for national distribution at the beginning of 2017.

The march of cannabis legalization and de-stigmatization continues! Even Mason Hembree’s own mother, a self-professed “anti-pot mom,” has come around to her son and husband’s CannaBrew initiative: “I honestly don’t think it’s the big, evil thing that I always thought it was. I’ve already had two.
